Virginia Beach middle school student hit by truck

The student attends Corporate Landing Middle School. Police said the driver won't face any charges.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Kristina Hager, the teen’s mother, said the driver asked her where she lived and alerted the family right away about what happened.

Hager walked outside and saw her daughter on the ground.

“When you're looking through your door and all you see is your daughter laying in the street, I mean, it’s totally overwhelming,” said Hager.

The teenager was crossing the street to get to the bus stop when she was struck by the truck.

“She was very scared, she was asking me ‘Mommy, am I okay?’” said Hager.

The teen’s grandmother, Cheryll McLaurin said the family sat by her side until the paramedics arrived.

“She was crying, she couldn't move her left arm, and her shoes were like down the street,” said McLaurin.

The teenager broke her collar bone and bumped her head. She's in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Officials with the Virginia Beach Police Department said the driver will not face any charges because the teen was distracted by her phone as she crossed the street.

“She did blame herself,” said Hager. “I believe it’s not okay because you should be more cautious driving down these roads especially during school time.”

John McLaurin, the teenager’s grandfather said the family is not blaming anyone for the accident.

“I don’t feel like the driver did anything inherently wrong, but I feel like he should have used more discretion and stopped at a school bus,” said McLaurin.

The family said they are relieved things didn’t turn out worse.

Hager is still in a state of shock but said her daughter’s words during this difficult time have been touching.

“She said ‘Mommy, I hope you're okay. I’m okay’” said Hager. “She was actually very concerned about everyone else's feelings except for her own and I was surprised. It was very heartbreaking."
