RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) is sounding the alarm on a door-to-door scam selling fake insurance to residents in the Tarheel state.

Recently, the NCDOI's Criminal Investigations Division has learned of two situations involving the scam. The department warns that some of the scammers have even presented fraudulent business cards depicting NCDOI's logo.

"The department does not sell insurance," a release states.

Since 2020, the North Carolina department has recorded at least four instances of someone posing as an agent selling insurance.

“If anyone approaches or calls you stating they are selling insurance and are with the North Carolina Department of Insurance, this is obviously a scam,” said Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey. “These impersonators are trying to scare or intimidate consumers into purchasing fraudulent insurance. Our Criminal Investigations Division will work with other partnership law enforcement agencies to pursue and root out this type of activity by seeking maximum charges.”

Causey also warns of similar scams regarding Medicare where the imposter requests your Social Security number.

If you or someone you know experiences this scam, the NCDOI urges you to report it by calling (919) 807-6840 or (888) 680-7684.
