Special Olympics torch run makes its way through Virginia Beach

Virginia law enforcement agencies are carrying the flame of hope for the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games in Richmond.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., (WVEC) -- Across the Commonwealth law enforcement agencies are carrying the flame of hope.

It's for the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games in Richmond.

On Wednesday, the torch made its way to Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

Antonio Rodriguez has been a Special Olympics athlete since he was eight years old. He loves to run.

"It helps me relax, helps me clear my mind," he said.

He along with Virginia Beach law enforcement broke a sweat carrying the torch.

"We're having a blast. We always do this to try to help out the Special Olympics community. It's all about inclusion and we just want to let them know that they're special and we appreciate them, just as much as they appreciate us," Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office Sgt. Karen Johnson said.

The law enforcement community also raises money to send athletes to compete.

"Region 3 raised over $78,000 last year. Region three is Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, around that area as well," Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office Capt. Kathy Vargas said.

She's also a liaison for Special Olympics.

After finishing about five miles, Virginia Beach passed the torch to Norfolk law enforcement.

Special Olympics athletes encourage other people with special needs to get involved.
