Thanksgiving volunteer options around Hampton Roads

Here are a few ways you can volunteer in the area this holiday season!

HAMPTON ROADS (WVEC) — When you think about volunteering during the holidays, maybe you think about the Salvation Army or the Union Mission.

Both organizations are great, but a lot of those opportunities fill up quickly and it’s not always easy to find other options.

13News Now talked with officials from Volunteer Hampton Roads to find out ways you can make a difference this year, outside of the more popular events.

Director of Development Melissa Reese gave us the inside scoop on a grassroots community effort in Norfolk. On Thanksgiving Day, you can help feed the homeless at O’Connor Brewing Company.

They’re looking for people to bring Thanksgiving-style food for the event. If you already have plans for the holiday, you can drop off the food without staying.

There’s a Facebook group if you’d like more information on how to help. You can also get started early if you’re leaving town for the holiday next week.

Saturday is Family Volunteer Day at Virginia Wesleyan University.

This is a great opportunity for younger volunteers because liability issues often prevent them from volunteering.

Six different non-profit service projects will be completed that help out groups like Families of Autistic Children of Tidewater. The field day activities begin at 9 a.m.

The Portsmouth Humane Society is looking for people to open their doors for a Thanksgiving foster event. You can take in one of their adoptable dogs just for the holiday weekend.

The hope, of course, is that you fall in love and decide to adopt.
