VIRGINIA, USA — Habitat for Humanity of Virginia affiliates can now apply for an affordable housing grant to help fund the building or restoration of five homes across the Commonwealth.

Virginia Housing is accepting applications for its Virginia House Grant, which totals $1 million in funding. Applications are open until Feb. 15.

"We have enjoyed seeing how The Virginia House Grant transforms lives in communities across the Commonwealth, and we look forward to each project and the impact it will have on the families and communities involved,” said Janet Wiglesworth, Chief Operations Officer and Interim CEO of Virginia Housing.

The grant will cover single-family homes' construction and loan subsidy costs so that the buyer can qualify for a mortgage. It aims to improve the shelter conditions of partner families in all corners of Virginia.

The nonprofit plans to fund a Habitat in each of the following regions: Eastern Virginia, Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, Southside Virginia and Southwest Virginia.

Virginia Housing said the build must be completed by the end of 2024 and be sold to a homebuyer who earns between 30% and 60% of AMI.

"The Virginia House Grant is one of many creative ways that Virginia Housing has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help hardworking, low-income Virginians achieve their dream of affordable homeownership," said Overton McGehee, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Virginia. "As these funds are recycled through mortgages, they will benefit many families beyond the first five homebuyers."

This year's Virginia House Grant will honor the nonprofit's former CEO, Susan Dewey, who retired in December.

The grant was introduced in 2022 in celebration of Virginia Housing's 50th anniversary.
