How Virginia Beach residents can get back unclaimed property

The unclaimed property event aims to connect rightful owners with those assets.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —

There are thousands of dollars in unclaimed assets sitting in the Commonwealth's treasury.

The Unclaimed Property Event aims to connect rightful owners with those assets.

Unclaimed property could be on cashed checks, insurance policy proceeds, dormant bank accounts and more.

Leigh Henderson, Virginia Beach city treasurer, said locals have received more than $200,000 annually through events like this.

"When people find money, especially during hard times it's a great thing. The city treasurer's office is usually the one who is collecting money and it feels really good to be able to facilitate giving some money back. So it's an awesome experience," Henderson said.

For the next two days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., callers can dial 1-833-302-0704 to discuss unclaimed property with Virginia treasury staff and file the necessary forms for a claim.

Nearly one in four Virginians have missing money in dormant or inactive accounts turned over to the Commonwealth. But over the next two days, the Virginia Beach treasury is trying to help you get that money back. Across the entire state, over a billion dollars in unclaimed assets have been returned.
