HAMPTON (AP) - Federal data show the Hampton VA Medical Center and its regional clinics have the longest wait times in the veterans system for appointments with primary care physicians.

Data released by the Department of Veterans Affairs show the average wait time at the hospital and its clinics is 30.53 days. The VA hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina, has the second-longest wait time, 28.45 days. The national average is 6.95 days.

Hampton VA director Michael Dunfee told media outlets on Tuesday that the hospital is addressing the problem.

Dunfee says the hospital is hiring primary care doctors. Expansions are underway at the campus Hampton and a clinic in Virginia Beach.

The expansions will add 11 primary rooms at the hospital and up to 20 rooms at the clinic.
