Local Army Corps of Engineers leader to move overseas

He's proud of the work done on the harbor deepening study and creating a collaborative work culture. Col. Jason E. Kelly is continuing his work in Afghanistan, more than 7,000 miles away.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Big changes are coming for a local leader. The district commander of the Army Corps of Engineers in Norfolk is getting ready to move overseas.

Colonel Jason E. Kelly spent the majority of his military service with a rifle and a pistol, so his time in Norfolk has been a bit different.

"I gotta tell you, boy, has it been a fun ride," said Kelly. He joined the Corps of Engineers three years ago. Now he's heading to Afghanistan in the same role he holds in Norfolk: commander.

He's proud of the work done on the harbor deepening study and creating a collaborative work culture. Kelly is continuing his work in Afghanistan, more than 7,000 miles away.

"I'm honored because we've been there for a long time, I think my role will be the continued institutional development of the Afghan security forces, certainly the power infrastructure there," said Kelly.

He said It's all about creating a more capable country, one that those who wish to do the United States harm will not be welcomed in.
