'The Saluting Marine' coming to Hampton Roads

Former Staff Sgt. Tim Chambers stands for attention for hours during "Rolling Thunder."

NORFOLK, Va. — He has made a name for himself through the years at the annual "Rolling Thunder" event in Washington.

Now, he's coming to Hampton Roads.

He's called "The Saluting Marine," but his real name is Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers of San Diego.

Now retired from the Marine Corps, Chambers stands at attention for hours at a time during the Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom each spring to honor veterans and raise awareness of POW-MIA issues.

"The Saluting Marine reached out to us in mid-December, notifying us that they're visiting 16 cities before ending up in the National Mall on Memorial Day in Washington, D.C.," said Doug Beaver, Military Liaison for the City of Norfolk. "And they wanted to come to the City of Norfolk, which made a lot of sense to us because we're military friendly. We're a veteran-friendly community."

Chambers' "Salute Across America"' tour starts in San Diego and will bring him to Hampton Roads on May 16th.

He will visit V-F-W Post 3160 in Ocean View, as well as the Hampton V.A., and the Battleship Wisconsin in downtown Norfolk.
