Navy's Fleet Forces Command taking over Second Fleet duties

As a cost-cutting measure, the Pentagon is disestablishing the Second Fleet.

NORFOLK The U.S. Navy's Second Fleet is being disestablished as part of the Pentagon's plan to save money.

The Second Fleet is responsible for training and certifying more than 125 ships. On September 30, Fleet Forces Command will take over duties of the Second Fleet, and the Navy is hoping for a smooth transition.

This week, the Second Fleet and Fleet Forces Command teamed up for an exercise that's testing their ability to manage a crisis.

'Second Fleet has been the mainstay of training, certifying and putting forces to sea and squadrons on ships and our forces into Afghanistan and also Iraq, who've performed superbly, and our intent here is to continue with that rich history,' stated Rear Admiral Scott T. Craig, Fleet Forces Deputy Chief of Staff.
