NFL player and Newport News native partners with Foodbank to give back

NFL Cornerback B.W. Webb is a native of Newport News, Virginia. He's helping the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank kick off their Summer Food Service Program once again.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Cincinnati Bengals’ cornerback and Newport News native B.W. Webb is giving back to his home community.

He's helping the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank kick off its Summer Food Service Program.

The program provides meals for kids who normally receive free and reduced meals during the school year. This way, the kids are not missing out on eating this Summer.

The Summer Food Service Program serves children at more than two dozen locations every day during the summer months.

“At the end of the day, it's about giving back,” Webb said. “It's a blessing to be a blessing to somebody else.”

On Friday, Webb and the Foodbank stopped in the King's Ridge neighborhood to serve a Summer meal. It's not Webb's first time helping with the program, and when he comes, he never comes alone. He brings friends, family and other NFL athletes.

“I try to bring people from different professions, so they can see, maybe you want to play sports, but that might not always be the case. You can still be a doctor and lawyer,” Webb said.

This is all part of a bigger weekend for Webb, which includes a free football camp Saturday, where kids get to learn from professional players. Webb said it's not just about providing meals but also giving young people hope.

“I remember growing up and going to the Michael Vick camps, and I saw those athletes. Knowing I wanted to be on their level, it gave me a chance to talk to them,” Webb said. “That's what I wanted to bring back here, give these kids a chance and show them there is still hope.”

Webb is a graduate of Warwick High School and The College of William & Mary. He is heading into his seventh season with the NFL.

Friday also marked the kickoff of Webb’s 5th Annual Celebrity Weekend.

He’s hosting a football camp Saturday, June 15th at Hampton Roads Academy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
