ODU hosts vigil to remember Chris Cummings

Sunday marked Christopher Cummings' 21st birthday. The ODU student was shot and killed last June.

NORFOLK -- Friends and loved ones gathered at Old Dominion University Sunday afternoon to remember Christopher Cummings.

The ODU student was shot and killed at his off-campus house last year.

Sunday marked his 21st birthday. His sister Kandace organized the event with help from his Theta Chi fraternity brothers.

No one has been arrested in the killing.

'By doing something like this, we keep people alert. We keep it constant. We keep it in the news. We keep it in the forefront of everyone's mind,' Kandace said.

Representative Bobby Scott also spoke at Sunday's vigil. He is co-sponsoring the Campus Safety Act with Cummings' uncle, Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings.

The family has put up a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Sgt. Wayne Handley of the Norfolk police department spoke to Cummings' peers during the vigil. He promised them that authorities are working diligently to solve the case and he urged anyone with information to come forward and provide the final pieces of the puzzle.

Cummings' friend Michal Barnett is doing what she can to keep his memory alive.

'If we let people forget about it, then we'll never find who did this. We can't brush it under the rug. We have to keep pushing forward,' Barnett told 13News.

T-shirts and other items were sold at the vigil to help raise money for a scholarship through the Remember Christopher Foundation. One of the shirts had Cummings' final Facebook status printed on it: 'Speak my mind, pour out my heart, love my soul.'
