Senator Tim Kaine hits the campaign trail in Hampton Roads

Democrat Tim Kaine met with military veterans and spouses in Hampton Roads

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC)-- Democrat Tim Kaine met with military veterans and spouses in Hampton Roads to hear their thoughts on a variety of bills and issues Tuesday.

Kaine wanted to let them know he wants to serve six more years in the U.S. Senate.

"Every day I get to serve Virginians, and my passion is a Virginia that works for all," he said. "So the pillars of my campaign are jobs for all, health care for all, education for all, security for all, equality for all. Those are my pillars."

Roundtable attendees liked what they heard from Kaine.

"I'm a former Navy officer, and I'm so impressed Senator Kaine would come out here, really seemed genuine wanting our input, listened thoroughly," said veteran Missy Smasa.

Military spouse Lakesha Cole was also impressed.

"It is very important to have someone like Senator Kaine on our side, advocating for military spouse employment, affordable child care," she said.

Retired Army Brigadier General Dave McGinnis concurred.

"And I've seen some of the best, and he's as good as any of them," he said.

The Republican National Committee has a different view on Kaine. Spokesman Garren Shipley told 13News Now that Kaine is out of touch with the vast majority of Virginia citizens.

"We really think that this race is going to come down to a choice between, do you want more of the far left policies that Tim Kaine is constantly espousing now, more flip-flops on issues that matter to Virginians, or do you want common sense conservative values?" he said.

Virginia voters will have to wait another 7 months before they get their say on Kaine at the ballot booth. Meanwhile, there is the June 12 Republican primary where voters will choose among five GOP candidates that are running against him.
