Storm damage reported in several areas in Virginia

TAPPAHANNOCK, Va. (WVEC) -- State Police say there are numerous injuries in the Essex County and Tappahannock areas, in the wake of Wednesday's tornados that struck Virginia.

Authorities say there are no reported fatalities, but at least 10 homes were destroyed and at least 50 structures have been severely damaged. Among the casualties: The 145-year-old St. John's Church, which was ruined.

This twister, with estimated 140 mile an hour winds, cut a 28-mile long path of destruction from the Middle Peninsula to the Northern Neck. The worst of it was centered on Kino Road.

"I'm just trying to get through the rubble, to see what I can find of any value," said Dennis Campbell, whose mother, brother, son and grandson were injured in the tornado.

Elsewhere, State Police say seven people have been injured in Appomattox County, where a funnel cloud left an 8- to 10-mile path of destruction.

Authorities say two of those seven people were seriously injured. Authorities have also located 78-year-old Edward K. Harris who went missing in Evergreen after his residence was destroyed. Harris's wife was injured following the storms.

The National Weather Service confirmed the EF-3 tornado struck the area.

It brought down numerous trees and power lines throughout Appomattox County, leaving as many as 4,000 residents without power.
