Va. Beach police sergeant charged with DUI released on bond

A member of the Virginia Beach Police Department who was arrested for driving under the influence has been released on bond.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A member of the Virginia Beach Police Department who was arrested for driving under the influence has been released on bond.

According to booking information from the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Margie Hobbs' blood alcohol concentration was nearly three times the legal limit Sunday night.

Police say she was driving with kids ages two and five. 13News Now has learned she attempted twice to get onto Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex.

Court documents show that base officers witnessed Hobbs hit jersey wall while she tried leaving the gates for the second time.

A judge granted her $5,000 bond with some stipulations. She's not allowed to drive, use alcohol or take drugs without a prescription from a doctor.

Her lawyer said Hobbs takes medications for various illnesses including diabetes. He also said she volunteers with kids.

Her next scheduled court appearance is April 8.

“There is no good excuse for having children in the car while you are impaired, let alone there is no good excuse to drive while you are impaired,” said Michael Goodove.

Goodove is an attorney in Norfolk and also the president of the Southside chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

“No one can escape impaired driving, it’s a systemic problem, we’ve come a long way but this still demonstrates that we have a long way to go in that area,” said Goodove, who does not know the specifics of the Hobbs case, but spoke generally on a bigger issue.

NAS Oceana officials released a statement about the incident:

A vehicle, driven by a female later identified as Virginia Beach Police Sergeant Margaret Hobbs arrived at Dam Neck Annex gate. Her conduct upon her arrival at the gate drew the attention of the gate sentries who contacted Virginia Beach Police, with whom the Navy works closely on law enforcement and security procedures. As a result Sergeant Hobbs was arrested by Virginia Beach Police.
