VIRGINIA BEACH--A teenager originally charged as a juvenile for a Virginia Beach homicide is now being charged as an adult.
Nijel Isaiah Chambers, 17, of the 5800 block of East Hastings Arch in Virginia Beach, was indicted for first degree murder and use of a firearm Monday in connection with the murder of Rene Rivera in the Lake Edward neighborhood on Nov. 17, 2012.
Prosecutors say Chambers is a juvenile but was transferred to Circuit Court to be tried as an adult due to the seriousness of the crime.
Police say Rene Rivera made a run to the store in his mother's burgundy minivan. He was on his way back to her house when he was shot and killed. Police found Rivera and the minivan on Lake Edward Drive near Baker Road.
Prosecutors say that a motions hearing or a trial date will be selected after Chambers has an attorney. Chambers has an attorney appointment hearing on March 7.
