As Boykin takes over as interim football coach at HU, former coach Prunty says he & the school "mutually agree to part ways"

Trent Boykin came to Hampton in 2020 after being the running game coordinator at Akron from 2012-18. He also had stops at Boston College and Ball State.

HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton University officially introduced interim head football coach Trent Boykin on Wednesday. After news last week that previous head coach Robert Prunty was no long with the program, Athletic Director Anthony Henderson at the press conference called the decision "mutual".

When asked about the timing of the decision which came well after the typical coaching cycle, Henderson said, "It is an odd time". He added, "The football coaching cycle is over. That usually happens December, January. We've gone through spring ball. I will admit it is unusual timing. I think it was something out of our control."

As for Boykin, who was the running backs and special teams coach, he's ready to get to work leading the Pirates. "I really appreciate the opportunity", he said. "They saw in me to be able to take this program over. I'm excited."

Boykin came to Hampton in 2020 after being the running game coordinator at Akron from 2012-18. He also had stops at Boston College and Ball State and brings 28 years of college coaching experience.
