Cedar Road in Chesapeake fully reopens after gas main strike this week

The Chesapeake Fire Department said an underground utility company was moling under the intersection when they struck an unmarked natural gas line.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Chesapeake Public Works Department said Cedar Road at Waters Road was closed in both directions due to a gas main strike Wednesday afternoon.

By about 7:45 a.m. Thursday, one eastbound lane of the road opened back up to traffic. Traffic on the westbound lanes was still being rerouted.

According to the Chesapeake Fire Department, an underground utility company was moling under the intersection when they struck an unmarked natural gas line.

Several nearby businesses were evacuated, including the Cedar Road Assembly of God and the Colonial Coast Girl Scout Council. Arrangements were made to have children from the Scout Council picked up by parents.

No one was hurt.

Cedar Road stayed closed between Country Club Boulevard and the eastern entrance to Bells Mill Road overnight Wednesday while emergency repairs continued.

The public works department tweeted Friday that all lanes of Cedar Road have reopened.
