Delays, areas to avoid due to Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore

Detours are in place after Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed due to a container ship striking it early Tuesday.

BALTIMORE — Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after a container ship struck it, resulting in major traffic delays and detours.

The collapse was reported around 1:30 a.m., resulting in search and rescue efforts at the location. Baltimore authorities stated in presser just before 6:30 a.m. that two people were rescued so far -- one of which refused treatment, while the other suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Traffic impacts are expected to be extensive.

Drivers are encouraged to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

The outer loop I-695 is closed at MD 10 (Arundel Expressway) and the inner loop of I-695 is closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Drivers should use I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes. Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.
