Public Works crews prepare for flooding following heavy rain across Hampton Roads

13News Now meteorologists predict up to four inches of rain. Public Works crews in Norfolk and Virginia Beach say they will be all hands on deck tomorrow.

NORFOLK, Va. — The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Flood Watch for Hampton Roads on Wednesday evening through Thursday evening.

13News Now meteorologists predict up to four inches of rain.

Public Works crews in Norfolk and Virginia Beach say they will be all hands on deck tomorrow. However, crews have already taken steps to drain potential floodwaters as quickly as possible.

Alana Smith with Norfolk Public Works says crews spent Wednesday clearing drains and monitoring pump stations.

“For example, all of our underpasses have pump machines, pump stations. So, we have those manned to make sure that water is moving the way that it should, so we don’t have water backups," Smith said.

Smith said crews will closely monitor low-lying areas, such as the Ghent and East Ocean View neighborhoods.

“Anywhere you can think in the city that floods or has an issue with water, we call them hotspots," she said.

Virginia Beach crews are taking the same approach.

“In a situation like this, we keep an eye out for the Shore Drive corridor, in the Lynnhaven Rivers, especially since the wind is coming out of the north," said Jonas Alered with Virginia Beach Public Works.

Some Norfolk residents tell 13News Now that they're fed up with the flooding.

“The flooding is just ridiculous in this area. Very, very bad," Norfolk resident Britney said.

Britney has lived in Norfolk for decades and is no stranger to flooding. She stocked up on groceries Wednesday afternoon ahead of the heavy rainfall.

“When we get rain like that I just try to get a whole bunch of groceries, so I don’t have to come out because I have kids," she said.
