Severe weather risk downgraded, but still a chance for strong, isolated storms

The Storm Prediction Center has downgraded the Hampton Roads area to a level 1 (Marginal Risk) threat.

NORFOLK, Va. — While the central United States has suffered multiple severe weather outbreaks early this week, the threat of severe weather is shifting east.

For Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina, the greatest threat of severe thunderstorms will arrive Thursday as a cold front approaches and passes through the region.

However, the Storm Prediction Center has downgraded the severe weather threat for Hampton Roads. While the SPC has shifted the level 2 (Slight Risk) threat to our south, the region remains under a level 1 (Marginal Risk) threat.

There could still be a few isolated, strong-to-severe storms Thursday afternoon and later in the evening as the cold front crosses the region.

At this point, it appears that the storm development will no longer be widespread enough to warrant this being a "Weather Alert Day." That said, it is important that everyone remain weather-aware this afternoon and evening.

Ahead of an approaching cold front, a few isolated showers and storms may fire up. While some of the energy previously outlooked now appears to be lacking.

Storms that do develop may produce some gusty winds and locally heavy downpours.

Later this evening as a cold front crosses the region, we could see some strong or possibly severe storms firing up along the front. Isolated storms could still produce gusty winds or hail.

Right now it looks like the threat for front-associated storm development is greatest over northern and northwestern sections of coastal Virginia. The front is expected to come in late Thursday evening and clear the coast after midnight.
