Norfolk City Council to vote on permanently closing portion of major road near Foreman Field

The expansion of the football stadium will encroach on Bluestone Ave., a main thoroughfare for people who live in the area.

NORFOLK, Va. — The renovation of Foreman Field at Old Dominion University is causing issues for some people who live in the area.

Louis Longo, an ODU student who lives in the Larchmont neighborhood said the temporary closure of Bluestone Ave., a major road leading into the neighborhood, is causing problems.

"You have to go all the way around to get to my street," said Longo.

The issue won't go away soon.

Next Tuesday, Norfolk City Council will vote on permanently closing a portion of Bluestone Ave.

City spokesperson Lori Crouch said this is the first step in beginning the process and many of the details cannot be determined at this point.

"The assumption at this time is that Bluestone will remain a public street so people can walk, ride a bike or drive down it," said Crouch. "All the details will not be ironed out until we are done with the entire process."

Longo worries about what the street could look like after all is said and done.

"It's gonna cause a lot more confusion for awhile and a lot more traffic on the back roads through the neighborhood," said Longo.

Already, the road closure has led drivers to go over medians leaving tire marks behind. Other people have driven the wrong way through streets in order to avoid looping around the entire neighborhood.

His mother, Stacia Longo, sees the problem too.

"I either have to come on top of [the median] or come over the wrong way to get to his house," said Longo.

Despite the closures and detours, Longo said he sees the light at the end of the tunnel.

"We'll get a good stadium out of it," said Longo.

Once City Council votes on permanently closing a portion of Bluestone Ave., it plans to hold hearings for the public.
