Former Southampton County Sheriff's deputy arrested for murder

Stephanie Mulder worked for the sheriff's office from 2008 to 2013. She is charged with second-degree murder in a February shooting.

COURTLAND, Va. — A former Southampton County Sheriff's deputy is in jail, charged with murder.

42-year-old Stephanie Mulder is accused of shooting and killing 33-year-old Jonathan Mulder in Courtland on February 4, 2023. Deputies were called to a home on Ivor Road early that morning after receiving a call for a shooting during a domestic dispute. Jonathan Mulder was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stephanie Mulder was arrested Wednesday, March 15, after several weeks of investigation.

The sheriff's office said she had been employed with the department from 2008 to 2013, where she worked in the detention division.

She is charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm while possessing schedule I/II narcotics.

Mulder is currently being held at the Virginia Beach City Jail.
