Residents have been asked to evacuate due to hazmat investigation in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. — Residents have been asked to evacuate the area due to a hazmat investigation on the 1st block of W. Lamington Road in Hampton, police said.

Hampton Police responded to a call for a possible drug overdose and found a 43-year-old man inside a shed unconscious behind the residence.

The man was taken to a local hospital by the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue to be treated.

Officials conducted a preliminary investigation. It revealed materials consistent with making methamphetamine and a possible explosive device.

Residents within close proximity were asked to evacuate the area.

The Newport News Police Bomb Squad and the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue Hazmat Team are still at the scene and are assisting the Hampton Police Division with the investigation.

The Virginia State Police/ Drug Enforcement Agency Divison 5 Drug Clandestine Unit has been notified.

A woman on the scene with active warrants on file was arrested.
