Virginia State Police investigate three fatal crashes over the weekend

The weekend of March 8-10 saw three fatal crashes in or near the Hampton Roads area.

VIRGINIA, USA — Three fatal crashes were reported in Brunswick County, Hampton and Virginia Beach over the weekend of March 8-10, according to Virginia State Police.

In Brunswick County, state police were called to Route 46/Woodward Lane on Friday around 9:40 a.m. 52-year-old John Harrison was driving a loaded tractor trailer in the northbound lanes of Route 46 when he ran off the road, striking several large trees. There is no evidence that speed or alcohol were a factor. State police say Harrison was killed upon impact.

In Virginia Beach, state police were called to separate multi-vehicle crashes in the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-264. Both crashes happened around 2:20 a.m. Saturday morning. In the westbound lanes, a fatal pedestrian crash happened at the same time as a non-fatal crash in the eastbound lanes, blocking lanes in both directions for a time.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 23-year-old man ran into traffic from the right shoulder near Newtown Road. He was struck first by a 2012 Hyundai Tucson traveling in the westbound lanes. He was then struck by a 2011 Toyota Avalon also traveling westbound. The identity of the pedestrian remains unknown. Both drivers remained on the scene and were uninjured.

In Hampton, state police responded to a single vehicle crash near Magruder Boulevard on I-64 Sunday morning around 11:20 a.m. Antonette Mitchell was driving a 2011 Hyundai Elantra westbound on I-64 when she lost control of her vehicle, running off the road and into the jersey wall. She was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. There were three other passengers in the vehicle, one of which suffered minor injuries. Mitchell was wearing her seatbelt and neither alcohol nor speed are contributing factors at this time, police said.
