Carolina Road reopened after gas leak shut down road

SUFFOLK, Va. —

A portion of Carolina Road in Suffolk was shut down Tuesday morning after a gas line was struck during a road work project. 

According to a news release from Suffolk Fire & Rescue, emergency crews received a phone call about the incident at 9:33 a.m. When those crews arrived at the scene at 9:40 a.m., they said they learned that the gas line was ruptured by an excavating company performing work nearby. 

Suffolk Fire & Rescue said about 40 workers were evacuated from the scene to a safe distance away. Occupants of nearby businesses and a nearby home were also advised to shelter in place. No one was hurt. 

Suffolk Police shut down Carolina Road at Benton Road in both directions, but the road has been reopened.
