HAMPTON, Va. — A federal loan of up to $143 million is coming to widen sections of Interstate 64 in Hampton, U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced Wednesday.

The project will widen the interstate and add a 12-foot-wide travel lane in each direction from Settlers Landing Road (exit 267) to LaSalle Avenue (exit 265), close to the heavy-traffic-prone Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

The funding will also be used to create one full-time express lane and one part-time express lane on the interstate, as well as replace the eastbound Hampton River bridges and widen the westbound Hampton River Bridge.

The loan is coming from the U.S. Department of Transportation and going to the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission.

“I-64 is essential for many Virginians to get to work, school, and critical services, while also serving as an important asset to our defense community in Hampton Roads,” Warner and Kaine wrote in a news release. “We’re glad the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission is receiving this loan to widen I-64, reduce congestion, and help Virginians get where they need to go.”
