NORFOLK, Va. — Flash flood warnings were issued for several cities across Hampton Roads Sunday afternoon due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.
A flash flood warning was issued Sunday for Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, and expired at 4:45 p.m.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield expected small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways and underpasses to be affected.
At around 1:50 p.m., NWS said between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain had fallen, and an additional 1 to 2 inches was possible.
Video captured by 13News Now Reporter Miles Hood in downtown Norfolk shows rain filling the streets, pouring onto the sidewalk.
Officials remind individuals who encounter flooded roadways to "turn around, don't drown."
As of 7:00 p.m. Sunday, all flood warnings had expired, and flood waters are receding.
With a strong cold front approaching on Memorial Day, there is concern that strong-to-severe thunderstorms are possible. Due to this, the 13News Now Weather Team has declared Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, a Weather Alert Day.
