Not just Heat Advisories: Hampton Roads is under an 'Excessive Heat Warning'

When heat index values exceed 110 degrees, an 'excessive heat warning' is issued.

NORFOLK, Va. — We all know it's hot; just step outside and there is no doubt we are in the "Dog Days of Summer."

Hampton Roads has been under a Heat Advisory for several days this week, but through this weekend you will experience something a little less common and a little more concerning: an Excessive Heat Warning.

So what is the difference? In our region, heat advisories and heat warnings are largely based on expected heat index values. This represents the combination of heat and humidity and the resulting difficulties our bodies have in cooling down or regulating our body temperatures.

When the heat index values are expected to reach 105° to 110°, a heat advisory is issued. When it is hotter, or more humid and expected heat index values exceed 110° an excessive heat warning is issued.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, temperatures will climb into the mid and upper 90s, and the humidity will likely produce heat index values over 110° for many parts of the 13News Now viewing area.

People in southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina need to take this heatwave seriously and practice hot weather safety!

Relief is coming next week when a cold front crosses the region Tuesday morning.  Highs Tuesday through Thursday should stay in the mid-80s.
