Here’s how you can help the family of Newport News police officer killed in the line of duty

Citizens can make a donation to a fund set up by the Newport News Police Department. You can also buy a memorial shirt featuring Officer Thyne's badge number.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News Police Department has established a donation site where you can make a gift to honor the legacy and career of Police Officer Katie Thyne.

The rookie officer died on January 23, 2020, after a car dragged her about a block before it crashed into a tree and pinned her.

The car had been pulled over in a traffic stop. Police said the driver, Vernon Green II, took off while Thyne was caught in the driver's side door.

Donations to the fund will go to Officer Thyne's family for the care of her 2-year-old daughter, Raegan.

She also left behind her mother and stepfather, three brothers, and a loving partner.

Officer Thyne joined the Newport News Police Department in 2018 and was assigned to the South Precinct.

She also served in the Navy Reserves during the time of her death.

To make a donation, visit the Newport News Police Foundation website.
