Man severely injured in shootout with Norfolk police

Norfolk Police Department is investigating a police shooting in Calvert Square Friday night.

NORFOLK, Va. — A man has been severely injured in a shootout with police Friday night, the Norfolk Police Department (NPD) said.

NPD said officers tried to stop a man they believed was wanted on an outstanding warrant in the 900 block of Bagnall Road at around 8:18 p.m. When officers attempted to approach the suspect,  he allegedly ran away and started exchanging gunfire with police.

The man, who has not been publicly identified at this time, was shot several times. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

One officer was injured but not by gunfire, according to NPD Chief Mark Talbot.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative duty as Virginia State Police (VSP) handles the investigation.

Police have not said what the man was wanted for.

This is the third shooting involving Norfolk police so far this year.

In January, a Norfolk officer and security guard shot and killed a man who was allegedly wielding a knife in a busy shopping center located on East Little Creek Road.

Then, in March, Norfolk police fatally shot a man who led officers on a chase before eventually crashing his vehicle on Terminal Boulevard near Hampton Boulevard and subsequently opening fire on officers.
