“Local grocery stores have been integral to our mission, in terms of providing food and funds to help children and families facing food insecurity in our service area,” said Ruth Jones Nichols, CEO, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. “We are grateful for Wegmans’ support and pleased to have gained another partner willing to join us in our efforts to eliminate hunger in Southeastern Virginia and on the Eastern Shore.”

When the tractor-trailer arrived at the food bank, a check of $7,200 will also be donated to the United Way of South Hampton Roads, representing a corporate gift combined with contributions already raised by Wegmans’ Virginia Beach employees.

“Food banks build healthier communities and food for the hungry is one of our most important giving priorities,” said Coyle. “It’s a privilege for us to partner with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore and begin making a difference even before our store opens next month.”

The new 113,000-square-foot Wegmans in Virginia Beach will be located near the intersection of Virginia Beach and Independence Boulevards. Its grand opening is set for April 28, 2019.
