Micah Ojo steps into a starring role for Princess Anne High School Girls Basketball

Following in her sister's footsteps, freshman Micah Ojo is already leaving her own mark on the Cavalier basketball program

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A quadruple-double is pretty rare to achieve in basketball, no matter what level. That's why seeing that Micah Ojo, a freshman on the Princess Anne basketball team, already has is pretty unbelievable.

"The kid is going to be fantastic as the years come," Princess Anne head coach Darnell Dozier said of Ojo. Dozier enters his 30th season with the program guiding the Cavaliers to 13 state championships and 10 in the past 11 years.

"You can't let it get to your head or else that's when you start to slow down and I know I just need to start getting faster and pushing myself," Ojo said.

But it's hard to imagine what that would look like. She's already averaging 19 points a game including a 29-point game against Menchville earlier this season. Beyond that quadruple-double she scored against Norview, Ojo has had at least a double-double in nine of the Cavaliers' 12 games this season.

"My teammates have really welcomed me and taught me the ropes and how to navigate everything. Their support along with my coach is the main reason I'm able to do what I do," she said. "I know this is something I want to do in the future, so I know I just have to motivate myself."

But before we look at the future it's worth taking a trip down memory lane. Growing up, Ojo spent a lot of time in the gym she now thrives in.

"Really because of my siblings, I saw them play and realized I wanted to, too."

Ojo has two older siblings, a brother and a sister, who played basketball for Princess Anne. Her sister, Michelle, won two state championships with Dozier a few years earlier. She now plays at Delaware.

"My sister coming here for basketball and just knowing the program, it was just good to come here. When she came home from practices, I remember she would be like, 'It's so hard it's such a tiring practice,' but she also knew that's why their team was so good," recalled Ojo. "They put in so much work and I needed to expect to put in that much work too."

Attending her sister's games was a core memory throughout Ojo's childhood.

"It was just kind of exhilarating to watch because of the way they played, and their style of play was so fast and it was so fun to watch."

Now Ojo walks into that same gym with a different perspective as the last Ojo sibling already leaving an indelible mark on the program.

"It definitely feels like it's gone by fast. It feels like just a couple of weeks ago I was watching my sister and my brother play here and now it's like all of a sudden I'm the one with the Princess Anne jersey on, I'm the one with 23 on... it's just a full circle kind of moment."
