1 dead, 1 hurt after car crashes into dump truck on I-264 in Portsmouth

The Honda driver who was killed was James Byron McRoy, a 25-year-old man from Suffolk. State troopers said he lost control of the car and drove across a median.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — One person is dead after a car crash involving two vehicles on I-264 in Portsmouth Monday morning, according to Virginia State Police. 

The crash happened on I-264 westbound near Greenwood Drive at 6:43 a.m., according to state police. 

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., officials said one of the vehicles was fully covered in flames.

Virginia State Police provided an update around 9:20 a.m. that said that 25-year-old James Byron McRoy, the driver of a 2004 Honda Accord, lost control and crossed the median, crashing into a dump truck. 

The dump truck then ran off the roadway and into the trees. 

McRoy, of Suffolk, was killed.

The driver of the dump truck, Willie Bernard Foster of Portsmouth, was also hurt but is expected to be okay. 

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said there weren't any pending charges in this investigation.
