Man arrested in Hampton for October murder in Bertie Co., N.C.

BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. — A man who was wanted for a murder in Bertie County, N.C. was arrested in Hampton on Friday.

According to a spokesperson for the Bertie County Sheriff's Office, 19-year-old Michael Thompson of Lewiston/Woodville was taken into custody by the Hampton Police Division's SWAT Team and investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office.

The spokesperson said Thompson was charged in the shooting death of 23-year-old Demetrice Futrell, who was found dead from a gunshot wound on Pine Street in Lewiston/Woodville at around 1 p.m. on October 25.

Investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina SBI investigated the incident and subsequently identified Thompson as the suspect.

Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone M Ruffin said: “It breaks my heart to see our young people who have not experienced life to cut their lives short. Whether it is spending the rest of their lives behind bars, or in a grave, the question is, is it worth it? 

"As Sheriff, along with other community leaders, we have dedicated our time to make our community and County a better place and we want Bertie County to be known for positive things. My team and I will continue to use proactive strategies to reduce gun violence in our county.”
