Homicide investigation underway after man found dead in vehicle in Hampton

Ricky Devon Brooks, Jr., 19 of Newport News was found shot to death inside a vehicle.

HAMPTON, Va. — Detectives said they were gathering information about a murder that took place in Hampton on Tuesday night.

Police received a call shortly before 10 p.m. to go to the first block of Sacramento Drive. When officers arrived, they found the body of 19-year-old Ricky Devon Brooks, Jr. inside a vehicle that was up against a tree.

He had been hit by gunfire, police said.

A family friend told 13News Now that Brooks was one of three children, and he was very close with his brother. Another person described Brooks as funny and energetic.

On Wednesday, people living on Sacramento Drive said enough is enough. Glenda Warren has lived on Sacramento Drive for nearly eight years. She said murder is uncommon.

“It’s scary,” Warren said. “You have to be careful, it's sad it's come to this.”

On Monday, Hampton police said someone shot a 17-year-old girl walking down a Hampton street. Investigators are still searching for the shooters and motives in both cases.

Warren says this murder is too close to home.

“You have to be careful, but you can't run from a bullet,” Warren said. “It’s everywhere, you can’t run from it.”

The motive of the shooting remains under investigation, and there is no suspect information available at this time.
