Crash on I-64 eastbound in Newport News involving pedestrian leaves one dead

The morning commute for many drivers was impacted, as the right two lanes were shut down while police worked the scene.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Virginia State Police were on the scene of a fatal crash on I-64 eastbound Tuesday morning. 

It happened at mile marker 260.5, which is near the border line of Newport News and Hampton. It's also near Harpersville Road. 

Officials said that the crash involved a vehicle and a pedestrian, and that it happened at 3:42 a.m. 

The pedestrian, who was identified in an updated release as Kevin Paniagua, 19, of Newport News, walked out into the lane from the right shoulder of the highway when he was hit by a 2021 Ford Econoline truck. 

Paniagua died at the scene, and the driver of the truck was not injured. 

At this time, there are no charges being filed.
